Research ArticleOpen accessPhrase in the titleObject Exploration Using a Three-Axis Tactile Sensing InformationS. C. Abdullah, Jiro Wada, Masahiro Ohka, Hanafiah YussofProblem statement: To advance the robust object recognition of robots, we present an algorithm for object exploration based on three-axis tactile data that is necessary and sufficient for the evaluation of contact phenomena. Approach: The object surface contour is acquired by controlling the finger position so that the normal force, measured by optical three-axis tactile sensors, remains constant as two … …Journal of Computer Science, Vol. 7, Issue 4 · 4 Apr 2011 · 7,313 accessesView PDFCite
Research ArticleOpen accessEvery word in the titleDesign, Fabrication, and Testing of a Membrane Piezoelectric Tactile Sensor with Four Sensing ElementsAshkan Mirbagheri, Javad Dargahi, Siamak Najarian, Farhad Tabatabai GhomsheWe presented design, fabrication, and testing of a novel membrane tactile sensing system with only four sensing elements. By using membrane stress combined with triangulation approach, it was possible to overcome the problems such as cross-talk between sensing elements, fragility, and complexity. The fabrication of the sensing elements performed using photolithographic and etching techniques. Position, orientation, and magnitude of applied … …American Journal of Applied Sciences, Vol. 4, Issue 9 · 30 Sep 2007 · 7,072 accessesView PDFCite
Research ArticleOpen accessIn the keywordsPrediction of Tumor Existence in the Virtual Soft Tissue by Using Tactile Tumor DetectorSayyed Mohsen Hosseini, Siamak Najarian, Samira Motaghinasab et al.We proposed a method to investigate the effects of the tumor existence that appear on the surface of the tissue. Finite element analysis provided properties such as the shape, depth, and location of the tumor which are important parameters for physicians to distinguish the correct condition of the patients. Several different cases were created and solved by the ANSYS software … …American Journal of Applied Sciences, Vol. 5, Issue 5 · 31 May 2008 · 6,985 accessesView PDFCite
Research ArticleOpen accessIn the keywordsA Novel Teletaction Control System for Detection of Human Pulse Wave with Applications in TeleoperationsJavad Dargahi, Saeed Sokhanvar, Siamak Najarian, Farhad Tabatabai GhomsheThe design of a smart medical tool that can detect the human pulse and transfer its data to a remote location is presented. The resulting control system can be used to detect the pulse wave of human obtained from the wrist area. Fabrication of the tactile sensor and its calibration procedure are discussed as well. Additionally, the design of the … …American Journal of Applied Sciences, Vol. 5, Issue 6 · 30 Jun 2008 · 6,919 accessesView PDFCite
Research ArticleOpen accessIn the keywordsTactile Distinction of an Artery and a Tumor in a Soft Tissue by Finite Element MethodAli Abouei Mehrizi, Siamak Najarian, Majid Moini, Farhad Tabatabai GhomsheTactile detection of a tumor and an artery in a tissue and distinction of a healthy artery from a stenotic artery, using finite element method, are presented. Four 2D models of tissue have been created: tissue itself, tissue including a tumor (TIT), tissue including a healthy artery (TIHA), and tissue including a stenotic artery (TISA). After solving four models with … …American Journal of Applied Sciences, Vol. 5, Issue 2 · 28 Feb 2008 · 7,596 accessesView PDFCite
Research ArticleOpen accessIn the keywordsFabrication and Testing of a Medical Surgical Instrument Capable of Detecting Simulated Embedded LumpsJavad Dargahi, Siamak Najarian, Reza Ramezanifard, Farhad Tabatabai GhomsheA novel endoscopic grasper is being fabricated and tested. This grasper can be used in detecting lumps or tumors in biological tissues. The detailed fabrication process of the tactile sensor has been discussed. Custom-made sensors were integrated with the jaws of the endoscopic grasper and objects with known tactile features were tested by the designed grasper. Different experiments were performed … …American Journal of Applied Sciences, Vol. 4, Issue 12 · 31 Dec 2007 · 6,999 accessesView PDFCite
Research ArticleOpen accessIn the keywordsOrientation Detection of Sensed Objects using a Four Sensor Tactile System with Applications in Bio-RoboticsAshkan Mirbagheri, Javad Dargahi, Siamak Najarian, Farhad Tabatabai GhomsheA novel approach is presented that can be used in determining the sensitivity of a four sensor tactile sensor to the orientation of the contacted objects. Computer simulations were conducted by using a rectangular probe of 14 mm by 7 mm size and applying three magnitudes of forces, i.e., 0.5, 1, and 2 N. A bi-variate function was obtained, showing … …American Journal of Applied Sciences, Vol. 4, Issue 11 · 30 Nov 2007 · 7,202 accessesView PDFCite

Research ArticleOpen accessIn the abstractSensorization of Robotic Hand Using Optical Three-Axis Tactile Sensor: Evaluation with Grasping and Twisting MotionsHanafiah Yussof, Jiro Wada, Masahiro OhkaProblem statement: Sensitization of robot hand is still remaining as crucial issue since most of robot hand systems nowadays are only capable to grasp a predefined specific object. It is still difficult for robot hand system to realize human-like tactile sensation. Some common problems in robot hand system are low accuracy sensing device, sensors are not robust enough for long … …Journal of Computer Science, Vol. 6, Issue 8 · 31 Aug 2010 · 7,846 accessesView PDFCite
