Research ArticleOpen accessIn the keywordsStatistical Modelling of Botswana’s Monthly Maximum Wind Speed using a Four-Parameter Kappa DistributionOliver Moses, Bhagabat Prasad ParidaWind speed modelling has been key to many environmental and engineering applications, particularly in environmentally friendly wind power generation to meet energy demands. Efficient assessment of wind speed at different recurrence intervals requires the choice of a suitable statistical distribution and an unbiased method of parameter estimation. This study suggests the use of a four parameter Kappa distribution, with its … …American Journal of Applied Sciences, Vol. 13, Issue 6 · 22 Jun 2016 · 7,546 accessesView PDFCite
Research ArticleOpen accessIn the keywordsA NEW APPROACH OF LOCAL FEATURE DESCRIPTORS USING MOMENT INVARIANTSLee-Yeng Ong, Siong-Hoe Lau, Voon-Chet KooMoment invariants have been widely introduced in recognizing planar objects for a few decades. This is due the robustness of moment function in distinguishing the original identity of object under various two Dimensional (2D) transformations. A set of moments computed from a planar images, represents the global description of an object's shape and geometrical features of an image. Since global … …Journal of Computer Science, Vol. 10, Issue 12 · 29 Dec 2014 · 7,954 accessesView PDFCite
Research ArticleOpen accessIn the keywordsImage Analysis with Legendre Moment DescriptorsAmy Chiang, Simon LiaoIn this research, a numerical integration method is proposed to improve the computational accuracy of Legendre moments. To clarify the improved computation scheme, image reconstructions from higher order of Legendre moments, up to 240, are conducted. With the more accurately generated moments, the distributions of image information in a finite set of Legendre moments are investigated. We have concluded that … …Journal of Computer Science, Vol. 11, Issue 1 · 15 Sep 2014 · 7,360 accessesView PDFCite
Research ArticleOpen accessIn the keywordsA Robust Recognition System for Pecan Weevil using Artificial Neural NetworksSaleh Mufleh Al-SaqerProblem statement: Pecan Weevil is a widely found pest among pecan trees and these pests are known to cause significant damage to the pecan trees resulting in enormous annual losses to pecan growers. Traditional identification techniques for pecan weevil include traps with pheromones to detect the infestation of these pests. However, these traditional methods require expensive labor hours to set-up … …American Journal of Applied Sciences, Vol. 9, Issue 9 · 14 Jul 2012 · 6,831 accessesView PDFCite
Research ArticleOpen accessIn the keywordsParameter Estimation for the Double Pareto DistributionFaris M. Al-AthariProblem statement: The double Pareto distribution appeared most often as model for variety of fields, including archaeology, biology, economics, environmental science, finance and physics. The distribution exhibits Paretian power-law behavior in both tails. The family of double Pareto distributions has recently been proposed for modeling growth rates such as annual gross domestic product, stock prices, foreign currency exchange rates and … …Journal of Mathematics and Statistics, Vol. 7, Issue 4 · 28 Oct 2011 · 8,674 accessesView PDFCite
Research ArticleOpen accessIn the keywordsLogo Recognition System Using Angular Radial Transform DescriptorsOmar Mohammed Wahdan, Khairuddin Omar, Mohammad Faidzul NasrudinProblem statement: The shape-based logo recognition systems have been developed to automate the logo registration process. The logo recognition operation faces many challenges such as having to recognize logos that might be scaled, rotated, translated and added with noises. Different types of logo’s shapes further add to the complex nature of this problem. Approach: We developed a logo recognition system … …Journal of Computer Science, Vol. 7, Issue 9 · 26 Jul 2011 · 7,197 accessesView PDFCite
Research ArticleOpen accessIn the keywordsAccurate Orthogonal Circular Moment Invariants of Gray-Level ImagesKhalid Mohamed HosnyProblem statement: Orthogonal circular moments of gray level images such as Zernike, pseudo Zernike and Fourier-Mellin moments are widely used in different applications of image processing, pattern recognition and computer vision. Computational processes of these moments and their translation and scale invariants still an open area of research. Approach: a unified methodology is presented for efficient and accurate computation of … …Journal of Computer Science, Vol. 7, Issue 5 · 7 May 2011 · 7,787 accessesView PDFCite
Research ArticleOpen accessIn the keywordsA Robust Rescaled Moment Test for Normality in RegressionMd. Sohel Rana, Habshah Midi, A.H.M. Rahmatullah ImonProblem statement: Most of the statistical procedures heavily depend on normality assumption of observations. In regression, we assumed that the random disturbances were normally distributed. Since the disturbances were unobserved, normality tests were done on regression residuals. But it is now evident that normality tests on residuals suffer from superimposed normality and often possess very poor power. Approach: This study … …Journal of Mathematics and Statistics, Vol. 5, Issue 1 · 31 Mar 2009 · 8,260 accessesView PDFCite
Research ArticleOpen accessIn the keywordsNovel Moment Features Extraction for Recognizing Handwritten Arabic LettersGheith Abandah, Nasser AnssariProblem statement: Offline recognition of handwritten Arabic text awaits accurate recognition solutions. Most of the Arabic letters have secondary components that are important in recognizing these letters. However these components have large writing variations. We targeted enhancing the feature extraction stage in recognizing handwritten Arabic text. Approach: In this study, we proposed a novel feature extraction approach of handwritten Arabic … …Journal of Computer Science, Vol. 5, Issue 3 · 31 Mar 2009 · 7,495 accessesView PDFCite
