Research ArticleOpen accessIn the abstractControl of Anthracnose Caused by Colletotrichum musae on Curcuma alismatifolia Gagnep. Using Antagonistic Bacillus spp.Supuk Mahadtanapuk, Mondhon Sanguansermsri, Robert W. Cutler et al.Over 400 bacterial strains, isolated from leaf surfaces of Curcuma alismatifolia Gagnep. and hot springs in the Chiang Mai province of northern Thailand, were screened in vitro for antagonistic activity against Colletotrichum musae, an anthracnose fungus. Three isolates provided greater than 75% growth inhibition of the fungus in vitro and were identified as Bacillus licheniformis, B. amyloliquefaciens and B. subtilis. … …American Journal of Agricultural and Biological Sciences, Vol. 2, Issue 2 · 30 Jun 2007 · 9,013 accessesView PDFCite
Research ArticleOpen accessIn the abstractAntimicrobial Susceptibility of Community Acquired Escherichia coli in Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) in Benin for Eleven Years (2005-2015)Tchiakpe Edmond, Laurence Carine Yehouenou, Zahra Fall Malick et al.Antimicrobial resistance became a growing public health problem in the world and Escherichia coli (E. coli) appeared as one of nine bacteria commonly causing infections in community and hospitals. It prevalence and it resistance to antibiotics were evaluated in Benin throughout an eleven year period. In this retrospective study, routine urine samples from patients collected at the National Laboratory (NL) … …American Journal of Infectious Diseases, Vol. 13, Issue 2 · 2 Oct 2017 · 7,780 accessesView PDFCite
Research ArticleOpen accessIn the abstractComparison of Microbial and Heavy Metal Contents in Soils and Roots under Mangrove Forest Stands with Different Levels of Pollution in the Niger River Delta, NigeriaAroloye Ofo NumbereOil and gas exploration in the Niger Delta, has resulted to increased heavy metal contamination. It is thus postulated that increased heavy metal will lead to decreased microbial content in soil and root. To test this hypothesis ten replicates each of soil and root samples were collected from already established sites. Samples were sent to the laboratory for analyses of … …American Journal of Applied Sciences, Vol. 15, Issue 2 · 25 Jun 2017 · 8,181 accessesView PDFCite
Research ArticleOpen accessIn the abstractOptimization of Process Conditions for the Production of Holocellulase by a Bacillus Species Isolated from Nahoon Beach SedimentsEvelyn N. Fatokun, Uchechukwu U. Nwodo, Ademola O. Olaniran, Anthony I. OkohProduction of holocellulase by a newly isolated marine Bacillus species via submerged fermentation technique at varying cultivation conditions was investigated. Enzyme production was optimized by altering one variable per time. Moreover effect of lignocellulosic saccharides in inducing cellulase and xylanase production was also investigated. The 16S ribosomal Deoxyribonucleic Acid (16S rDNA) gene sequence analysis exhibited 98% sequence similarity of the … …American Journal of Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Vol. 13, Issue 2 · 8 Apr 2017 · 8,034 accessesView PDFCite
Research ArticleOpen accessIn the abstractEconomic Evaluation of Streptococcus Pneumoniae Culture MediaVictor Morais, Norma SuárezStreptococcus pneumoniae, a major bacterial pathogen worldwide, requires a complex medium for culture, which complicates harvesting of antigens for vaccine production. Here we present an economic evaluation of factors affecting the production cost of a chemically defined medium for the scale up of fermentation of S. pneumoniae, compared with the most traditional fermentation media. A basic laboratory-scale experiment of 1 … …American Journal of Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Vol. 12, Issue 2 · 27 May 2016 · 8,379 accessesView PDFCite
Research ArticleOpen accessIn the abstractScreening of Multi-Drug and Metal Resistant Aeromonas Species from Diverse SourcesRamasamy Amsaveni, Muthusamy Sureshkumar, Joseph Reshma Mary et al.The abuse of antibiotics in the modern era, lead the microorganisms to develop resistance. Antibiotic resistance becomes the part of natural selection in bacteria which allows them to survive in different environments. Bacteria like Aeromonas are able to adapt to changes in the environment such as an increase in antibiotic concentration, which often results in the development of mutations allowing … …American Journal of Infectious Diseases, Vol. 11, Issue 2 · 7 Aug 2015 · 7,577 accessesView PDFCite
Research ArticleOpen accessIn the abstractSELECTIVE ISOLATION OF A GRAM NEGATIVE CARBAMATE PESTICIDE DEGRADING BACTERIUM FROM BRINJAL CULTIVATED SOILDilara Islam Sharif, Mithun MollickA bacterial species having the ability to grow in the presence of carbosulfan pesticide “Marshall” was isolated from Solanum melongena (brinjal) cultivated soil in Khulna region, Bangladeh, having a history of pesticide usage. The strain was morphologically and biochemically identified to belong to the genera Pseudomonas. A comparative study of growth of this strain with other isolated bacteria showed its … …American Journal of Agricultural and Biological Sciences, Vol. 8, Issue 4 · 24 Sep 2013 · 7,455 accessesView PDFCite
Research ArticleOpen accessIn the abstractBio-Guided Study on Melastoma malabathricum Linn Leaves and Elucidation of its Biological ActivitiesMourouge Saadi Alwash, Nazlina Ibrahim, Wan Yaacob AhmadThe present study aimed to isolate and identify constituents with antibacterial activity from the Methanol extract of Melastoma malabathricum leaves (MMML) through bioassay guided fractionation. Furthermore, the study scoped to evaluate the cytotoxic effects of M. malabathricum leaves fractions for possible protective effect of antoxidative constituents present in the fractions. Research ArticleOpen accessIn the abstractRapid Real Time PCR Based Detection of Cell Count in Case of Urinary Tract InfectionPoulomi Nandy, Ashoke Ranjan Thakur, Shaon Ray ChaudhuriMicrobial identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing methods currently used in clinical microbiology laboratories require at least two to three days because they rely on the growth and isolation of micro-organisms. This long, but necessary, delay has enormous consequences on prophylactic usage of antimicrobial drugs. This study was an attempt to reduce this detection time span. Taq Man Real Time PCR … …American Journal of Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Vol. 9, Issue 2 · 22 Jun 2013 · 8,217 accessesView PDFCite
