Research ArticleOpen accessIn the abstractScreening of Yeast Strains for Pectinolytic Activity: Effects of Different Carbon and Nitrogen Sources in Submerged FermentationsMustafa Oskay, Hüsniye Tansel YalçinTwenty yeast strains were screened for pectinolytic activity, among the strains, only nine were positive for pectinase production. The best strain was Kluyveromyces marxianus NRRL-Y-1109 which gave high quantities of pectinase activity, by submerged fermentation. Different parameters such as incubation time, pH (3.5-7), temperature (20-45°C), nitrogen and carbon source, were optimized. The optimal incubation time, temperature and pH for pectinase … …OnLine Journal of Biological Sciences, Vol. 15, Issue 3 · 22 Jun 2015 · 7,818 accessesView PDFCite
EditorialOpen accessIn the abstractRe-Paving the Road Built by Chemistry: A Challenge to Biochemistry and BiotechnologyAlberto A. IglesiasBiochemistry’s birth can be placed at the end of the nineteenth century, when Eduard Buchner made a clever interpretation of experimental observations on the generation of gas bubbles after addition (the original purpose was preservation) of sucrose to a yeast crude extract (Lagerkvist, 2005). Intelligently, Buchner concluded that the disaccharide had been fermented by broken cells’ suspension to produce CO2, … …American Journal of Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Vol. 11, Issue 1 · 26 Jan 2015 · 7,468 accessesView PDFCite
EditorialOpen accessIn the abstractRECENT TRENDS AND CHALLENGES OF ENERGY EFFICIENT AND SUSTAINABLE BUILDINGSChiara BedonAccording to several studies (e.g., the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, 2014), the US Energy Information Administration (US EIA, 2014), warming of the climate system is unequivocal and mainly derives from greenhouse gas emissions due to human activities. Global Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions from fossil fuels, for example, are estimated to be 29% higher in 2035 than they were … …American Journal of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Vol. 7, Issue 3 · 11 Sep 2014 · 8,503 accessesView PDFCite
Research ArticleOpen accessIn the abstractRESPONSE SURFACE METHODOLOGY ANALYSIS OF POLYPHENOL RECOVERY FROM ARTICHOKE WASTEAntonio ZuorroLarge amounts of a solid waste consisting mainly of outer bracts and stems are produced from the industrial processing of artichokes. In this study, the recovery of polyphenols from the two waste components was investigated. Extraction experiments were carried outby an environmentally friendly procedure using aqueous ethanol as solvent. The total polyphenol content, expressed as mg of GAE per g … …American Journal of Applied Sciences, Vol. 11, Issue 9 · 3 Jul 2014 · 7,196 accessesView PDFCite
Research ArticleOpen accessIn the abstractTHE HIGH VOLUME REUSE OF HYBRID BIOMASS ASH AS A PRIMARY BINDER IN CEMENTLESS MORTAR BLOCKCheah Chee Ban, Noor Shazea Ahmad Nordin, Part Wei Ken et al.High Calcium Wood Ash (HCWA) and Pulverised Fuel Ash (PFA) are by-products from the wood biomass and coal energy production which are produced in large quantity with combined annual production of 500 million tonnes. This poses a serious problem for disposal of the waste material especially at places where land is scarce. The prescribed study was aimed to examine the … …American Journal of Applied Sciences, Vol. 11, Issue 8 · 29 May 2014 · 7,168 accessesView PDFCite
Research ArticleOpen accessIn the abstractWaste Heat Recovery from Boiler of Large-Scale Textile IndustryPrateep Pattanapunt, Kanokorn Hussaro, Tika Bunnakand, Sombat TeekasapMany industrial heating processes generate waste energy in textile industry; especially exhaust gas from the boiler at the same time reducing global warming. Therefore, this article will present a study the way to recovery heat waste from boiler exhaust gas by mean of shell and tube heat exchanger. Exhaust gas from boiler dyeing process, which carries a large amount of … …American Journal of Environmental Sciences, Vol. 9, Issue 3 · 21 Jun 2013 · 7,514 accessesView PDFCite
Research ArticleOpen accessIn the abstractEnvironmental Sustainability of Oil IndustryVera Rocca, Dario VibertiSimilarly to most industrial activities, the oil industry can affect the environment at several stages. The greatest impact is the release of waste into the environment in concentrations that are not natural. Virtually in all cases, the adverse impact can be minimized or eliminated through the implementation of a proper waste management plan. Over the past few years the oil … …American Journal of Environmental Sciences, Vol. 9, Issue 3 · 3 Jun 2013 · 8,121 accessesView PDFCite
Research ArticleOpen accessIn the abstractEnvironmental Ethics in Governing Recycled Material Styrofoam for Building Human HabitatRavichandran Moorthy, Kartini Aboo Talib Khalid, Suhana SaadStyrofoam is extensively used in food packaging businesses throughout the world. Its light weight makes it a favorite food package for entrepreneurs in food businesses. However, unlike its content, the food, which decomposed easily after some time, Styrofoam remains un-decomposed due to its oil-based structure. This study discusses the prospects of re-utilization of Styrofoam as environmentally friendly recycled material. This … …American Journal of Environmental Sciences, Vol. 8, Issue 6 · 28 Dec 2012 · 8,150 accessesView PDFCite
